Chile, 30 de diciembre de 2023: La minera privada SQM entregará casi 5.000 hectáreas en la cuenca, la segunda con mayor volumen de litio del mundo.

SQM es, por lejos, la empresa que más tiene propiedad minera en el Salar de Maricunga, que Codelco busca explotar a través de su filial Salares de Chile.

La minera privada tiene 4.696 hectáreas en esa cuenca de la Región de Atacama, la mitad de lo que posee la cuprera estatal, según datos de la Cámara Chilena del litio. De ahí que sea clave la página 7 del Memorándum de Entendimiento (MoU) de Codelco-SQM, que en el punto 1.12 establece que la minera no metálica se compromete a transferir a Codelco todas las pertenencias que posee en Maricunga y en el área comprendida dentro de los cinco kilómetros contados desde el perímetro exterior de dicho salar.

Con ello se viabiliza el proyecto que allí tiene Codelco, que está en proceso de adquirir el 100% de la minera australiana Lithium Power International (LPI) en US$ 244 millones y cuyo principal activo es el proyecto Salar Blanco precisamente en Maricunga, al lado de las pertenencias de la estatal y la minera no metálica privada (ver mapa).

Según fuentes de la industria del litio, la estatal podría extraer hasta 40.000 toneladas de carbonato de litio equivalente (LCE) de aquí al 2030. La mitad vendría del proyecto Blanco.

La cesión de SQM, señalaron conocedores del tema, entraba las negociaciones con el Grupo Errázuriz, que desarrolla su propio proyecto en la zona en conjunto con el fondo asiático Simbalik.

‘No hay negociaciones con Codelco’, señalaron fuentes de este consorcio. ‘En todo caso, con la transferencia de propiedad minera, se mejora el vecindario en Maricunga’, agregaron dichos personeros, en relación a la histórica pugna entre Errázuriz y SQM.

Maricunga tiene la segunda concentración de litio conocida a nivel mundial.

En mayo de este año, Codelco terminó su campaña de exploración en esa cuenca. De las 132 muestras analizadas en laboratorio, extraídas a partir de la perforación de un conjunto de 10 pozos, se observan concentraciones que van entre 517 y 1.787 miligramos por litro (mg/l), con un promedio de 1.073 mg/l y una mediana de 978 mg/l.

En total, en esta operación se perforaron en el salar 2.368 metros, llegando a profundidades máximas levemente superiores a los 400 metros en el caso del pozo más hondo.

SQM is by far the company with the largest mining property in the Salar de Maricunga, which Codelco seeks to exploit through its subsidiary Salares de Chile.

The private mining company has 4,696 hectares in that basin in the Atacama Region, half of what the state-owned copper company owns, according to data from the Chilean Chamber of Lithium. Hence, page 7 of the Codelco-SQM Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is key, which in point 1.12 establishes that the non-metallic mining company undertakes to transfer to Codelco all the properties it owns in Maricunga and in the area within five kilometers from the outer perimeter of that salt flat.

This makes viable the project that Codelco has there, which is in the process of acquiring 100% of the Australian mining company Lithium Power International (LPI) for US$ 244 million and whose main asset is the Salar Blanco project precisely in Maricunga, next to the properties of the state-owned company and the private non-metallic mining company (see map).

According to lithium industry sources, the state-owned company could extract up to 40,000 tons of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) by 2030. Half of this would come from the Blanco project.

SQM’s cession, according to those familiar with the matter, was part of the negotiations with the Errazuriz Group, which is developing its own project in the area in conjunction with the Asian fund Simbalik.

‘There are no negotiations with Codelco,’ said sources from this consortium. “In any case, with the transfer of mining property, the neighborhood in Maricunga is improved‘, added these people, in relation to the historical dispute between Errázuriz and SQM.

Maricunga has the second largest known concentration of lithium in the world.

In May of this year, Codelco completed its exploration campaign in that basin. Of the 132 samples analyzed in the laboratory, extracted from the drilling of a set of 10 wells, concentrations ranging from 517 to 1,787 milligrams per liter (mg/l), with an average of 1,073 mg/l and a median of 978 mg/l, were observed.

In total, 2,368 meters were drilled in the salt flat, reaching maximum depths slightly greater than 400 meters in the case of the deepest well.
