Argentina: CONICET y el British Geological Survey, cooperación científica para la industria del litio ►Argentina: CONICET and British Geological Survey, scientific cooperation for the lithium industry

Buenos Aires, 18 de Marzo de 2024: El Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) de Argentina y el Servicio Geológico Británico (BGS, por sus siglas en inglés) realizaron el encuentro de trabajo: “Workshop en Litio” , Oportunidades y desafíos de la cooperación científica en la industria del litio, que contó con la participación de especialistas en la materia de ambas instituciones con el objetivo de compartir sus líneas de investigación y profundizar en los desafíos y tendencias a nivel mundial en esta temática.

El investigador del CONICET y el director del Instituto de Química, Física de los Materiales, Medioambiente y Energía (INQUIMAE, CONICET- UBA), Ernesto Calvo fue el coordinador científico del encuentro. De la apertura participaron la vicepresidenta de Asuntos Científicos del CONICET Claudia Capurro y el Jefe de ciencia e innovación de la Embajada Británica en Argentina, Simon Chater.

Respecto al encuentro, Capurro aseguró: “Para el CONICET estas actividades son de vital importancia porque se trata de cómo generar valor agregado a partir de la explotación sostenible de nuestros recursos estratégicos. Es un debate que integra y aborda una convención completa del litio cubriendo una amplia gama de temas como son el análisis político, social, económico, tecnológico y el medio ambiental y legal”. Por su parte, Chater resaltó la calidad y experiencia científica y tecnológica de Argentina en el ámbito del litio y manifestó el interés en fortalecer una agenda en litio que se extienda a otros actores científicos y tecnológicos de ambos países.

Al cierre de la jornada estuvo presente el presidente del CONICET, Daniel Salamone, quien destacó el rol de los especialistas del Consejo y la importancia de trabajar en un tema estratégico para el país como el litio. Asimismo, remarcó el trabajo interinstitucional con colaboradores internacionales.

Durante el encuentro, especialistas del CONICET y del BGS disertaron sobre diversas temáticas como: la extracción/recuperación de litio a partir de salmueras naturales, tendencias mundiales, utilización equitativa de los recursos, perspectivas socioeconómicas, impactos ambientales, entre otros. Asimismo, los participantes interactuaron bajo el formato PESTLE (sobre factores Político, Económico, Social, Tecnológico, Legal y Ambiental).
para debatir en torno a las diversas implicancias e impactos del litio.

Buenos Aires, March 18, 2024: The National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) of Argentina and the British Geological Survey (BGS) held the “Workshop on Lithium”, Opportunities and Challenges for Scientific Cooperation in the Lithium Industry. which was attended by specialists in the field from both institutions with the aim of sharing their lines of research and deepening in the challenges and trends worldwide in this subject.

The CONICET researcher and director of the Institute of Chemistry, Physics of Materials, Environment and Energy (INQUIMAE, CONICET- UBA), Ernesto Calvo, was the scientific coordinator of the meeting. The opening ceremony was attended by CONICET’s Vice-President for Scientific Affairs Claudia Capurro and the Head of Science and Innovation of the British Embassy in Argentina, Simon Chater.

Regarding the meeting, Capurro said: “For CONICET these activities are of vital importance because it is about how to generate added value from the sustainable exploitation of our strategic resources. It is a debate that integrates and addresses a complete lithium convention covering a wide range of topics such as political, social, economic, technological, environmental and legal analysis”. For his part, Chater highlighted the quality and scientific and technological experience of Argentina in the field of lithium and expressed his interest in strengthening a lithium agenda that would be extended to other scientific and technological actors in both countries.

At the end of the session, the President of CONICET, Daniel Salamone, was present and highlighted the role of the Council’s specialists and the importance of working on a strategic issue for the country, such as lithium. He also highlighted the inter-institutional work with international collaborators.

During the meeting, specialists from CONICET and BGS gave lectures on different topics such as: lithium extraction/recovery from natural brines, world trends, equitable use of resources, socioeconomic perspectives, environmental impacts, among others. Participants also interacted under the PESTLE format (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental factors).
to discuss the various implications and impacts of lithium.
